1. In my suitcase, I’ll bring…
The infamous hospital bag. We sometimes think that we need Hermione’s bottomless magic bag to put everything we need. Whether you travel light or not, the important thing is to bring your essentials in terms of comfort and reassurance! In addition to your basics and the essential baby tiems, here are some suggestions you may not have thought of:
- Loose clothes, easy to open in the front if you are breastfeeding
- Tasty and nutritious snacks (a nice change from hospital food that is not always yummy!)
- Post-delivery sanitary napkins or adult diapers (you’ll be comfortable and dry!)
- A bottle of water with which you can easily spray yourself after you urinate (yes, yes, if it happens to burn, you will be glad to be able to ease the pain)
- A good lip balm
- Moisturizing body cream (with a smell that makes you feel good!)
- Balm for the nipples
- Nursing pads if you are breastfeeding
- Your phone, to immortalize the first moments of your new life, or simply to listen to music that makes you happy
- A bottle of non-alcoholic champagne if you feel like celebrating!
2. Rocking does miracle!
Do not make the same mistake as other moms before you. Invest in a good rocking chair! Never ever will a couch or a fixed chair give you as much comfort as a baby rocking chair to feed your baby, sleep and relax. 3. It’s normal to get the baby blues
We often tend to plan everything for the arrival of baby, while forgetting about the post-delivery period. Talk to the mothers around you; they may tell you how the most difficult thing was not the delivery itself, but the time afterwards. Physical fatigue, fluctuation of hormones, wave of tears and a lot of happiness. This powerful cocktail of emotions may hit you hard after the birth of your baby. All of this can sometimes lead to what is referred to as the baby-blues.
It’s 100% normal to feel hyper-emotional, irritable or even a sense of maternal incompetence. Give yourself time to assimilate your new role as a great mom, enjoy every moment with your baby, and get to know each other. These symptoms usually go away on their own, between a few hours after birth and 14 days. Do not hesitate to talk to your doctor, your partner and other moms before, during, and after birth. There is nothing better than understanding what is happening to us in order to be able to cope with it.
4. Fill your freezer with delicious homemade dishes
With the birth of your baby, you may already have your arms full, literally and figuratively! For you as much as for your baby, it is essential to continue to feed in a healthy manner, at least 3x per day, even though it will sometimes seem difficult to find the time or energy to cook. This is where your freezer comes to the rescue!
During the month before your due date, prepare all your favorite meals in large quantities and freeze them in small portions. Combine business with pleasure, and organize cooking afternoons with your friends and family! The preparation will be twice as fast and twice as fun.
5. It’ spring cleaning time
You’re not a fan of cleaning? Imagine having to do it with a baby and an average of 3 hours of sleep per night. To give you a little rest, clean the house a couple of days before you leave for the hospital. It may seem like trivial advice, but there is nothing more soothing than to come back home with a newborn baby, to a clean-as-a-whistle house!
If your pregnancy is trying, consider using the services of a housekeeping professional, asking for a helping hand, or doing simple tasks such as washing baby clothes or arranging your room. All small actions will make a big difference when you come home from the hospital.
